Indian-Style Butter Gnocchi

This butter gnocchi mixes Indian and Italian cuisines, bathing tender gnocchi in a creamy and richly spiced tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons ghee or unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh gingerroot
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 package (16 ounces) potato gnocchi
  • Freshly chopped cilantro, for garnish

Directions

  1. Heat ghee in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion; cook until soft, 3-4 minutes. Add garlic, ginger, cumin, garam masala, coriander, chili powder and turmeric; cook until fragrant, 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add tomatoes, sugar and salt; simmer over medium-low heat until the sauce thickens and the color deepens, 10-15 minutes. Stir in cream, broth, lemon juice and gnocchi; cook until gnocchi is tender, 3-5 minutes.
  3. To serve, spoon into shallow bowls; garnish with cilantro.
