This hearty steak pizza adds juicy sirloin steak to a thin-crust pizza crust topped with garlic-herb cheese spread and piled high with veggies.

Friday night is always pizza night at our house. And while I typically make a pepperoni or sausage pizza, I’m always looking for new pizza recipes to add to my repertoire. This steak pizza recipe is a flavorful alternative to a traditional tomato-based pizza.

Instead of tomato sauce, garlic-herb cheese creates the base flavor for this pie. Then it’s topped with fresh spinach, thinly sliced red onion and tender seared sirloin steak. Mushrooms and a generous topping of shredded mozzarella ensure every bite of this hearty pizza is full of savory flavor. While we sear the steak on the stovetop, this is an excellent recipe for leftover grilled steak or other cuts of meat.

Steak Pizza Ingredients

  • Beef top sirloin steak: Top sirloin is a type of steak that’s lean, juicy and incredibly beefy in flavor. An equally inexpensive cut of beef to use is flank steak. Ribeye or New York strip steak are excellent options, though more expensive.
  • Seasoning: The steak is seasoned simply with salt and pepper before cooking.
  • Olive oil: Cooking the steak in olive oil adds flavor to the meat. You could also use a neutral cooking oil such as canola, avocado or vegetable oil.
  • Pizza crust: A premade thin pizza crust means this recipe comes together quickly.
  • Garlic-herb spreadable cheese: Garlic-herb cheese adds a ton of savory flavor to this steak pizza. Use your favorite store-bought brand or make a homemade garlic cheese spread.
  • Fresh spinach: This nutritious leafy green adds a pop of color to this savory pizza. Baby spinach or whole leaf spinach works well; you chop it anyway. You can also use baby kale.
  • Red onion: This type of onion has a peppery and spicy flavor, which complements the creamy, tangy and savory flavors of the pizza. Though cooking the onion will help soften its sharp bite, you can also soak the sliced red onion in cold water for five minutes to mellow its flavor before cooking.
  • Fresh mushrooms: Fresh mushrooms add an umami, or savory, flavor to the pizza. Some of the best types of mushrooms to use for pizza include button mushrooms, baby portobello mushrooms or cremini mushrooms.
  • Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella cheese adds a mild and creamy flavor to the steak pizza. For the best flavor, freshly shred the cheese yourself. However, pre-shredded store-bought mozzarella cheese also works in a pinch.

Directions

Step 1: Cook the steak

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Season the steak with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the steak and cook for five to six minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 145° for medium-rare doneness. Remove the steak from the pan and let it rest for five minutes.

Editor’s Tip: Resting allows the juices to redistribute through the steak, which helps prevent them from escaping when you slice the steak.

Step 2: Prep the pizza crust

Place the pizza crust on an ungreased baking sheet and spread with the garlic-herb cheese. Top with spinach and sliced onion.

Step 3: Add the remaining toppings

Cut the steak into thin slices and arrange in an even layer on the pizza. Top with mushrooms and cheese.

Step 4: Bake the pizza

Bake the pizza for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cheese melts. Cut the pizza into 12 pieces and serve.

Steak Pizza Variations

  • Crazy for crust: Use naan or focaccia bread instead of precooked pizza crust. You could also parbake a crust using refrigerated pizza dough or homemade pizza dough.
  • Use steak seasoning: Season the steak liberally with your favorite steak seasoning beforehand. Use your favorite store-bought brand or play with the flavor profile using different steak seasoning blend recipes.
  • Add more or less veggies: The world is your oyster regarding pizza toppings. Keep it simple and just use one veggie to top the pizza. Or, try also adding fresh bell peppers and sliced black olives. After cooking the pizza, sprinkle fresh herbs such as thyme, basil or oregano on top.

How to Store Steak Pizza

Leftover steak pizza should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To prevent the toppings from sticking, arrange the slices in an even layer, separating each layer with parchment. Steak pizza leftovers last three to four days.

Can you freeze steak pizza?

Yes, you can freeze steak pizza. The easiest way is to freeze the pizza as individual pieces. After the pizza has cooled completely, wrap the leftovers tightly in storage wrap. Freeze the wrapped slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. Transfer to a freezer bag or other freezer-safe container, and store in the freezer for up to two months.

How do you reheat steak pizza?

Although my favorite way to eat leftover pizza is cold from the fridge (don’t yuck my yum!), you can reheat pizza in the oven, microwave or air fryer or on the stovetop.

Can you make steak pizza with fresh pizza crust?

Absolutely! Use your favorite pizza dough recipe or try our recipe for the best pizza dough. You will need to parbake the crust before making the pizza. Place the rolled-out dough on a pizza pan and prick thoroughly with a fork. Bake in a 400° oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Then proceed with the recipe as written.

What else can you serve with steak pizza?

Serve steak pizza with a big green salad, like a simple Italian salad or company green salad. Pack in more nutrition with a roasted vegetable side dish, such as roasted asparagus, Parmesan-roasted broccoli or garlic-roasted Brussels sprouts. Or, pair your savory pizza with something on the sweeter side, such as our perfect bite fruit salad.
