Commenters had a lot of thoughts on Martha Stewart's unusual bagel-eating technique.
Martha Stewart Just Shared How She Eats a Bagel—And We’re Not Surprised at All
There are plenty of ways to eat a bagel. Most of them involve a generous smear of cream cheese and very little deliberation. But when Martha Stewart explains how she eats a bagel, you already know it’s going to be precise, thoughtful and just a little bit extra.
Earlier today, Stewart shared her personal bagel-eating method on Instagram, crediting the technique to her daughter, Alexis. The post itself is playful, but (unsurprisingly) it didn’t take long to get some strong reactions. Not because of what was on the bagel, but because of how it was eaten. The comments section quickly filled with curiosity, amusement and the collective realization that this is exactly how you’d expect Martha Stewart to eat a bagel.
How does Martha Stewart eat her bagels?

Stewart’s method starts with a PopUp Bagels bagel—specifically, a poppy seed bagel, which she says is her favorite. PopUp Bagels is a popular East Coast brand known in part for the way the bagels are sold: hot and fresh with a small tub of cream cheese for dipping.
First, Martha cuts the bagel in half. Then, she cuts the halves in half. Instead of eating it as-is, Stewart breaks one quarter into what she calls “sweet little pieces.” Each piece is topped individually with a “modicum” of cream cheese—flavored or plain—before getting eaten one by one. It’s not so much a bagel as it is a demonstration of poise and composure.
Of course, this is not how most New Yorkers eat bagels. In a city where bagels inspire deep loyalty and even deeper opinions, this technique would raise more than a few eyebrows. But as a way to enjoy a very large NYC bagel in smaller bites, it’s pure Martha—methodical, tidy and presented as though it were an obvious choice all along.
Whether you’re intrigued enough to try it or firmly committed to eating the whole thing at once, one thing is certain: When Martha Stewart explains how she eats something, it becomes a moment.
